Dental implants are the revolutionary new way to replace missing teeth.
An implant is a titanium screw that replaces the root of the natural tooth. Hopefully, after a few months, the body accepts the implant as a new root. Then a porcelain tooth is placed on top of the new artificial root. Alternatively the implant can be used to support a bridge or even a denture (resulting in a restoration that should last a lifetime).
Missing teeth may be replaced in a number of ways (including with): dentures, bridges and implants. With implants we literally reconstruct a new tooth and root. Implants provide an infinitely more comfortable alternative to dentures and feel and look like natural teeth. Under the correct circumstances and good oral hygiene, implants can last 20+ years.
Implants stand alone and shouldn’t damage the other adjacent teeth, something that can occasionally happen with dentures or the preparation for bridges.
Despite “the wonders” of implants there are other considerations. Implant treatment is very specialised and in the real world one must consider the financial implications of such treatments.
Often several investigations to assess the quantity and quality of bone are necessary. This again can add time and cost to the total treatment.
Sometimes when a tooth has been missing for several years the bone may have shrunk and require bone added or augmented to the site – again increasing time and cost.
We hope to provide our patients with a very honest understanding about what is involved with any course of treatment – what are the risks, possible hidden extra procedures and very importantly we are clear and up front with patients about what price treatments will cost.
Can anyone have implants?
You must be more than 18 years of age as this is when the gums around the teeth reach maturity – the so called ‘church window’ appearance. At the first consultation, we will make a thorough assessment to ascertain if this type of treatment is required or suitable for you.
